Environmental Laboratory Chemist to join a plant operations and quality control team in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Environmental Laboratory Chemist will have a minimum of 5 years of experience as a Lab In-Charge, Laboratory Chemist, or Quality Control Chemist, with strong practical knowledge of chemical analysis, feedstock testing, laboratory operations, plant process monitoring, HSE compliance, and quality assurance.

The successful candidate will be responsible for analyzing raw materials and feedstocks, monitoring critical laboratory and process parameters, supporting production teams, maintaining accurate laboratory records, operating plant processes through SCADA systems, and ensuring compliance with established SOPs, safety procedures, and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Feedstock and Raw Material Analysis

  • Analyze raw materials and feedstocks, including vegetable oils, animal fats, and other relevant materials, to determine their suitability, quality, and consistency.
  • Conduct laboratory testing and accurately measure critical chemical and physical parameters, including:
    • Free Fatty Acid (FFA)
    • Ester content
    • Density
    • Viscosity
    • Flash point
    • Cloud point
    • Pour point
    • Acid value
    • Methanol content
    • Water/moisture content
  • Evaluate test results against established specifications and quality standards.
  • Identify abnormal results, investigate deviations, and communicate findings to relevant departments.
  • Maintain accurate and traceable laboratory records for all tests, measurements, samples, and analyses.

Quality Control and Laboratory Operations

  • Perform routine and non-routine laboratory analyses to support production and quality control activities.
  • Prepare detailed laboratory reports for Quality Assurance (QA), regulatory audits, internal reviews, and management reporting.
  • Ensure laboratory equipment, testing procedures, and documentation are maintained according to approved procedures.
  • Support troubleshooting of raw material and product quality issues.
  • Provide technical feedback to production teams regarding feedstock quality and its potential impact on process efficiency and final product quality.
  • Recommend corrective actions when laboratory results fall outside approved specifications.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives aimed at improving product quality, process efficiency, and laboratory performance.

Process Monitoring and SCADA Operations

  • Monitor and control plant operations through the SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system.
  • Operate plant processes strictly in accordance with approved Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Monitor critical operating parameters and identify abnormal process conditions or deviations.
  • Coordinate with plant operators, maintenance personnel, engineers, and management to maintain safe and efficient plant operations.
  • Troubleshoot operational and process-related issues and assist in implementing appropriate corrective solutions.
  • Analyze interactions between laboratory results, process parameters, equipment performance, efficiency, safety, and operating costs.
  • Identify opportunities to optimize plant processes, reduce waste, improve yield, and enhance overall operational efficiency.

Reporting and Documentation

  • Prepare accurate daily operational and laboratory reports covering key activities, test results, process parameters, production performance, and significant events.
  • Prepare comprehensive monthly reports summarizing operational performance, laboratory findings, key metrics, deviations, corrective actions, and improvement initiatives.
  • Ensure reports are completed accurately and submitted to the relevant departments within established timelines.
  • Maintain proper documentation and records for laboratory activities, plant operations, inspections, maintenance, incidents, and corrective actions.
  • Maintain technical reports and documentation related to laboratory and plant operations.

HSE and Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensure laboratory and plant operations comply with applicable health, safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements for Environmental Laboratory Chemist.
  • Follow company HSE policies, procedures, SOPs, and emergency response requirements.
  • Support the implementation of safety procedures and training programs for plant personnel.
  • Participate in safety audits, inspections, risk assessments, and hazard identification activities.
  • Identify unsafe conditions and recommend appropriate corrective and preventive measures.
  • Ensure incidents, near misses, unsafe conditions, and safety hazards are properly documented and investigated.
  • Support corrective and preventive actions designed to prevent recurrence of incidents.
  • Ensure safe operation and maintenance procedures for machinery, laboratory equipment, and plant systems are documented and readily accessible.
  • Maintain records required to demonstrate compliance with government regulations, industry standards, and company policies.
  • Support internal, external, regulatory, and client audits and inspections.

Training and Team Support

  • Provide guidance and technical support to laboratory and plant personnel.
  • Assist in training employees on laboratory procedures, equipment operation, safety requirements, SOPs, and emergency response procedures.
  • Maintain accurate employee training records and ensure personnel receive appropriate training for their assigned responsibilities.
  • Promote a strong culture of safety, quality, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Communicate effectively with plant operators, maintenance technicians, engineers, laboratory personnel, and management.

Maintenance and Continuous Improvement

  • Coordinate with maintenance teams regarding laboratory and plant equipment issues.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance-related records, including inspections, repairs, replacements, and equipment servicing.
  • Assist in identifying recurring operational problems and developing practical solutions.
  • Analyze plant systems and processes to identify opportunities for improvement in efficiency, safety, reliability, quality, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Stay updated on relevant industry practices, analytical techniques, laboratory technologies, process technologies, and safety requirements.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement projects aimed at reducing waste, improving yield, optimizing processes, and maintaining consistent quality.

Desired Candidate Profile

  • Minimum experience as a Lab In-Charge, Laboratory Chemist, Environmental Chemist, Quality Control Chemist, or similar role.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Chemistry.
  • Strong practical knowledge of quality control, laboratory testing, chemical analysis, and process monitoring.
  • Experience analyzing feedstocks such as vegetable oils, animal fats, or similar raw materials is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of laboratory parameters including FFA, ester content, density, viscosity, flash point, cloud point, pour point, acid value, methanol, and water content.
  • Familiarity with SCADA-based plant monitoring and process control.
  • Strong understanding of laboratory safety, plant HSE requirements, SOPs, and regulatory compliance.
  • Excellent analytical, quantitative, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong report-writing and documentation skills.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to coordinate effectiv
