Medical Laboratory Supervisor for a leading Healthcare Management in Abu Dhbai, UAE to oversee daily clinical laboratory operations and ensure the delivery of accurate, efficient, safe, and high-quality laboratory services.

The role involves supervising laboratory technologists and support staff, coordinating daily workload and staffing requirements, monitoring laboratory performance, reviewing and approving laboratory results, maintaining quality assurance systems, and ensuring compliance with applicable regulatory, accreditation, occupational health, infection control, and patient safety requirements.

The Medical Laboratory Technologist Supervisor will also contribute to service development, staff training, quality improvement initiatives, clinical audits, policy development, and operational planning. The position requires strong clinical laboratory experience together with demonstrated leadership and supervisory capability.

Job Responsibilities

Laboratory Operations and Supervision

  • Supervise the day-to-day operations of the assigned laboratory section or service area.
  • Coordinate laboratory activities to ensure efficient and timely delivery of services.
  • Monitor the performance of the assigned service area and laboratory staff.
  • Allocate daily workloads according to staffing levels, workload demands, technical requirements, and service priorities.
  • Monitor changing and competing demands and make appropriate decisions regarding prioritization of laboratory procedures.
  • Provide operational support to laboratory staff and assist with resolving day-to-day service issues.
  • Provide coaching, guidance, and professional support to laboratory technologists and support personnel.
  • Receive delegated responsibilities and assume responsibility for operational management of the department in the absence of the laboratory manager, when required.
  • Organize and coordinate the work of professional and assistant staff to meet daily service requirements.
  • Ensure effective collaboration with other laboratory sections, clinical departments, physicians, nurses, and senior management.
  • Participate in regular laboratory and service-area meetings.
  • Maintain effective communication between laboratory personnel and other healthcare professionals.

Leadership and Service Development

  • Assist in developing the strategic vision for the laboratory section and contribute to service development plans.
  • Prepare reports relating to laboratory service performance, development, operational requirements, and future plans.
  • Participate in the development, implementation, and review of departmental policies and annual business plans.
  • Identify opportunities for improving laboratory services, workflow, efficiency, and patient care.
  • Recommend service expansion, enhancement, or redesign where appropriate.
  • Participate in section-wide projects and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Support the development and implementation of cost improvement and resource optimization initiatives.
  • Assist with managing delegated budgets and ensure services are delivered within approved financial and operational constraints.
  • Contribute to service redesign, resource allocation, and appropriate use of laboratory resources.

Staff Management and Workforce Development

  • Assist with the management and supervision of laboratory employees.
  • Support objective setting, performance monitoring, annual leave planning, supervision, and professional development activities.
  • Participate in recruitment, staff induction, training, competency assessment, and performance appraisal in accordance with applicable organizational policies.
  • Assist with the orientation and integration of newly appointed laboratory personnel.
  • Ensure laboratory staff receive appropriate clinical and technical supervision.
  • Identify training and development needs and support staff in maintaining professional competency.
  • Promote accountability, teamwork, professional conduct, and continuous improvement among laboratory personnel.

Inventory and Resource Management

  • Monitor laboratory inventory levels and ensure adequate availability of reagents, consumables, materials, and equipment.
  • Minimize material wastage through appropriate stock rotation, inventory control, and just-in-time ordering practices where applicable.
  • Ensure appropriate laboratory techniques are followed to reduce unnecessary consumption and wastage.
  • Review and approve inventory requirements and submit supply orders in consultation with senior staff.
  • Monitor laboratory equipment and report maintenance, replacement, or service requirements.
  • Ensure appropriate use and storage of laboratory materials, reagents, and equipment.

Technical Laboratory Responsibilities

  • Oversee the monitoring and approval of laboratory findings to ensure accuracy, reliability, and appropriate reporting of results.
  • Review laboratory test data and ensure accurate entry and maintenance of results within the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
  • Verify laboratory findings in accordance with established procedures and authorization requirements.
  • Provide appropriate technical information regarding laboratory test results to requesting physicians when required.
  • Evaluate laboratory data and prepare technical or operational reports as required.
  • Participate in method evaluation, validation, verification, and development in accordance with applicable laboratory policies and standards.
  • Ensure laboratory procedures are performed according to approved methodologies and established technical requirements.
  • Support evidence-based laboratory practices relating to diagnosis, testing, and patient management.
  • Participate in the review and implementation of relevant local, national, and international laboratory guidance.
  • Perform assigned on-call, shift, weekend, and public holiday duties as required.

Quality Assurance and Patient Safety

  • Promote and maintain a strong culture of laboratory quality, patient safety, and continuous improvement.
  • Ensure compliance with laboratory quality control and quality assurance programs.
  • Monitor internal quality control processes and ensure appropriate corrective and preventive actions are implemented when required.
  • Ensure Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are maintained, reviewed, implemented, and followed across relevant laboratory sections.
  • Support method evaluation and continuous improvement of laboratory testing processes.
  • Monitor compliance with applicable laboratory standards, regulatory requirements, and accreditation requirements.
  • Participate in quality improvement projects, audits, inspections, and accreditation activities.
  • Support the development and implementation of clinical audit processes within the laboratory service.
  • Document laboratory interventions, quality activities, incidents, corrective actions, and other required information accurately.
  • Ensure appropriate documentation is maintained in accordance with organizational policies and regulatory requirements.

Infection Control and Occupational Safety

  • Ensure compliance with laboratory safety policies and procedures.
  • Promote appropriate infection prevention and control practices within laboratory areas.
  • Ensure staff follow applicable precautions designed to prevent cross-contamination and healthcare-associated infections.
  • Ensure appropriate handling, storage, transportation, and disposal of laboratory specimens and potentially hazardous materials.
  • Monitor compliance with occupational health and safety requirements.
  • Promote safe working practices and ensure laboratory personnel understand and follow established safety procedures.
  • Report and appropriately manage laboratory incidents, hazards, accidents, and occupational exposures in accordance with facility procedures.

Confidentiality and Patient Information

  • Maintain strict confidentiality of patient information and laboratory records.
  • Ensure laboratory personnel maintain confidentiality when handling patient data, test results, reports, and other clinical information.
  • Ensure information is communicated only to authorized personnel in accordance with applicable policies, professional standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Communicate professionally and courteously with patients, families, physicians, nurses, and other healthcare personnel when obtaining information, clarifying laboratory requests, explaining procedures, or communicating laboratory status.

Training and Education

  • Deliver training and education sessions for laboratory staff and other healthcare professionals as required.
  • Participate in staff induction, competency training, peer review, case discussions, clinical presentations, and continuing professional development activities.
  • Support orientation and training programs for newly appointed employees.
  • Promote continuous learning and professional development within the laboratory team.
  • Participate in departmental programs, committees, hospital committees, and staff meetings.
  • Ensure appropriate internal and external sharing of laboratory information in accordance with governing policies and procedures.
  • Maintain current professional knowledge by attending relevant lectures, seminars, workshops, conferences, and online education programs.
  • Ensure personal licensure, professional certification, mandatory training, and other regulatory requirements remain current.
  • Support adequate clinical and technical supervision for laboratory staff according to their professional development needs.

Research, Audit, and Continuous Improvement

  • Support the development and implementation of laboratory clinical audits.
  • Participate in audit activities and prepare reports as required.
  • Encourage the use of evidence-based laboratory practices.
  • Support research and service evaluation activities where applicable.
  • Participate in quality improvement and service development initiatives.
  • Identify opportunities to improve laboratory turnaround times, workflow, service quality, staff performance, and patient safety.
  • Contribute to the implementation of national, local, regulatory, and facility-level requirements affecting laboratory services.

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent recognized qualification in Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Laboratory Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, Biomedical Science, or a related laboratory discipline.
  • Valid professional registration/licensure appropriate to practice as a Medical Laboratory Technologist/Laboratory Scientist in the UAE.
  • Strong clinical laboratory experience in a hospital, diagnostic laboratory, or other accredited healthcare laboratory environment.
  • Demonstrated supervisory or leadership experience within a clinical laboratory.
  • Strong knowledge of clinical laboratory procedures, quality control, quality assurance, laboratory safety, infection prevention, and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience working with a Laboratory Information System (LIS) and electronic laboratory records.
  • Good understanding of laboratory accreditation and quality management requirements.
  • Strong communication, organizational, analytical, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and laboratory workloads in a busy healthcare environment.
  • Ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
  • Willingness to work shifts, on-call duties, weekends, and public holidays when required.

Required Clinical Experience

Candidates should meet the applicable experience requirements for the position, including one of the following pathways:

  • Minimum 6 years of clinical laboratory experience in an accredited clinical laboratory environment, such as a laboratory accredited by CAP, JCI/JCIA, Canadian accreditation bodies, CPAC, or an appropriately accredited local UAE healthcare facility, counted from first registration as a qualified laboratory science professional.
  • At least 2 years of experience in a laboratory supervisory position for the above pathway.
  • Alternatively, a minimum of 8 years of clinical laboratory experience following initial professional registration, together with at least 5 years of experience after obtaining a relevant higher qualification, where applicable.
  • UAE Nationals may be eligible under applicable requirements with a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in an acute-care hospital and at least 1 year of managerial, supervisory, or equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrated progressive leadership and management experience in a clinical laboratory or healthcare environment is required.
