A leading healthcare laboratory is looking for a Medical Laboratory Technologist in Abu Dhabi – dedicated to delivering high-quality diagnostic services while maintaining the highest standards of patient care, laboratory quality, and regulatory compliance.The Medical Laboratory Technologist will support the Anatomical Pathology department by ensuring accurate processing of tissue specimens for histopathological examination. The role involves specimen accessioning, tissue processing, gross assistance, embedding, microtomy support, staining procedures, equipment maintenance, quality assurance activities, and compliance with laboratory accreditation standards.

Working closely with pathologists, laboratory scientists, and healthcare professionals, the technologist will ensure every specimen is processed accurately, safely, and efficiently while maintaining complete specimen traceability throughout the laboratory workflow.

Responsibilities – MLT

Specimen Reception and Accessioning

  • Receive tissue specimens from operating theatres, outpatient clinics, and healthcare facilities.
  • Verify patient identification and specimen details before accessioning.
  • Register specimens accurately into the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
  • Maintain complete specimen traceability throughout the laboratory process.
  • Ensure all specimens are labeled correctly according to laboratory protocols.
  • Identify and immediately report discrepancies in specimen labeling or documentation.

Histopathology Specimen Processing

  • Perform proper fixation of tissue specimens using approved laboratory procedures.
  • Prepare tissue samples for routine histopathology processing.
  • Assist in gross examination and dissection of low- to medium-complexity specimens under the supervision of a pathologist.
  • Trim specimens according to established laboratory guidelines.
  • Process tissues using automated tissue processors.
  • Embed processed tissues into paraffin blocks with precision.
  • Prepare tissue blocks for microtomy procedures.

Histology Laboratory Operations

  • Prepare tissue sections using microtomes while maintaining optimal section quality.
  • Perform routine staining procedures, including Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) staining.
  • Assist with special staining procedures as required.
  • Ensure slides are correctly labeled and matched with corresponding tissue blocks.
  • Maintain organized storage of tissue blocks and microscope slides for future retrieval.

Quality Assurance and Laboratory Compliance

  • Follow laboratory quality management systems and standard operating procedures.
  • Participate in internal quality control and external quality assurance programs.
  • Ensure compliance with:
    • ISO 15189 Medical Laboratory Accreditation
    • College of American Pathologists (CAP)
    • Joint Commission International (JCI)
    • Emirates International Accreditation Centre (EIAC)
    • Department of Health (DOH) Abu Dhabi regulations
  • Monitor laboratory quality indicators.
  • Report non-conformities and participate in corrective and preventive action (CAPA) activities.
  • Support continuous quality improvement initiatives.

Equipment Operation and Maintenance

  • Operate laboratory instruments and histopathology equipment safely.
  • Perform routine maintenance and calibration checks.
  • Report equipment malfunctions promptly.
  • Maintain equipment maintenance logs.
  • Ensure laboratory instruments are functioning within validated parameters.

Documentation and Record Keeping

  • Maintain accurate laboratory records and documentation.
  • Record quality control results.
  • Document specimen processing activities.
  • Ensure complete traceability of specimens, tissue blocks, and slides.
  • Follow document control procedures in accordance with accreditation standards.

Health, Safety, and Infection Control

  • Adhere to laboratory biosafety and infection prevention protocols.
  • Handle biological specimens and hazardous chemicals safely.
  • Use personal protective equipment (PPE) appropriately.
  • Dispose of laboratory waste according to healthcare regulations.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized laboratory environment.

Team Collaboration

  • Work closely with pathologists, laboratory technologists, and healthcare professionals.
  • Support efficient laboratory workflow and timely reporting.
  • Participate in laboratory meetings and training sessions.
  • Assist with laboratory audits and accreditation assessments.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Science – MLT, Biomedical Science, or a related healthcare discipline.
  • Valid Department of Health (DOH) Abu Dhabi License as a Medical Laboratory Technologist or eligibility to obtain licensure.
  • Professional registration in accordance with UAE healthcare regulations is preferred.
  • Experience working in a Histopathology or Anatomical Pathology Laboratory.
  • Hands-on experience in tissue processing and specimen handling.
  • Experience with histology laboratory workflows and quality systems.
  • Previous experience in an accredited healthcare laboratory is highly desirable.
